5 Best Movies of 2016!

April 12, 2017
best movies of 2016

There were a lot of great movies that came out in 2016 but we are only going to talk about the best movies. I know that I could have probably made the list twice as long because there were so many films that I liked that came out this year! This list is only made up of the movies that I’ve personally seen.

Zootopia

This was by far my favorite animated movie that came out this year! This was definitely a movie made for kids but yet it had a very, VERY adult message. Be sure to check out “Wisecrack” and “The Film Theorists” YouTube channels and look up their videos on Zootopia. If you’re someone that saw the movie and got the message right away like I did, then you know exactly why I think this is the best animated kids movie of the year! This was such a refreshing new take on a  kids movie for me, as someone who enjoys basically every Pixar movie. At some point, you tend to grow accustomed to happy endings and plots surrounding kid friendly messages like “never give up” and “always believe in yourself.”

With such lovable characters and a kid friendly story, you would never realize the darkness behind this movie unless you look a little closer.  Not every kids movie has to be all about love and peace. It can also have a crazy and unique theme that you would literally never expect to find in a children’s  film.

Captain America: Civil War

This movie was a total BLAST! I seriously doubt I have ever had this much fun watching any other movie in my life.  As someone who has a deep love for super heroes, and a husband who has an even bigger infatuation then I do, this movie was absolutely insane! If you are a fan of the Marvel universe and have not yet seen this movie, what are you even doing? If you’re someone who is a fan of superheroes in general but haven’t seen this movie yet, I don’t know what’s wrong with you. Even if you don’t really like super hero movies, you will LOVE this one!

I could not believe how good this movie was! I don’t really like any of the Thor movies. Do I enjoy all the Iron Man movies? The first one was great. Was the first Avengers movie good? Not really. Was Age of Ultron perfect? YES! Is Captain America my favorite super hero. NO. Not by a long shot. Are Marvel’s Captain America movies always amazing though? YES! This movie was so incredible that everyone in the theater, including my husband and I, were in was going crazy too! It’s just a fun movie! When you see all these amazing superheroes in one movie, you can’t help but be excited. Incredible action sequences, incredible performances by everyone, terrific and interesting plot… just all in all an outstanding movie.

10 Cloverfield Lane

I am someone who is obsessed with thrillers. This was the best thriller movie of the year by a long shot. John Goodman really played his role so well I was speechless and Mary Elizabeth Winstead was phenomenal! There is so much secrecy and suspense in this movie that it drives you insane and that is what I love about this movie. You want to figure out the mystery from the very beginning. This movie is the sequel/prequel to the 2008 hit “Cloverfield.” If you enjoyed that movie, you will LOVE this one!

While you don’t have to watch “Cloverfield” before watching “10 Cloverfield Lane” I think it might be a good idea to look at the first movie just to get more of an understanding of what’s going on. This movie is called a prequel/sequel for reasons that I don’t want to spoil for you. Just go watch it! If you can’t get enough of thrillers, and are always wondering why the characters act the way they do … then make sure you watch this movie. You definitely won’t regret it!

Deadpool

This movie was terrific! I’m not someone that knows much about Deadpool, but since I have such a superhero crazed husband, he made sure not to tell me anything about the movie and just took me to see it as soon as it came out to make sure he wouldn’t spoil anything for me. I have nothing to say accept for this is probably the best superhero movie I have ever seen. I know, I know, I went on and on about how fun and amazing Civil War was, and it certainly was! But I still have to put Deadpool on the number one spot for superhero movies. Civil War is still a solid number two though.

I love this superhero! I’ve heard of him before, but I never really knew much about his back story. This guy is insane but lovable. I guess I couldn’t really call him a superhero though. I think that’s why I like this movie so much. He’s more of a neutral character than a good or bad guy. I guess he’s basically the Catwoman of the Marvel universe. Charming and helpful when you need her, but untrustworthy and a bit evil by nature. Ryan Gosling plays his character perfectly! I honestly can’t picture anyone else playing him. This is an outstanding movie that I can honestly see anybody enjoying, even people that have no interest in super hero movies. If you like to laugh and have a good time, you’ll love Deadpool!

The Magnificent Seven

This was my favorite movie of the year! I usually HATE westerns. They’re usually so boring and stupid that I just can never fully enjoy myself. I have always made it a conscious effort to not watch westerns because it is literally my most hated genre. When I was forced to watch “3:10 to Yuma,” it instantly ended up on my top five favorite movies of all time list. Now whatever was taking up the number one spot on my top five favorite movies list is going to instantly be replaced by “The Magnificent Seven.”

It’s like saying I hate all spy themed movies but then having “Mission Impossible” be your number one favorite movie of all time. It makes no sense. But I honestly think that is what shows a great movie. If it’s a genre that you can’t stand but then you end up loving the movie so much that it gets to be number one on your list of favorite movies, you know it must be good! I literally love every single character in this movie. Denzel Washington is the man; Chris Pratt is a god; Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio killed it.! Even the other three members of the Magnificent Seven like Byung-hun Lee, Manuel Garcia Rulfo, and Martin Sensmeier were like my favorite characters in the movie!

The plot of this story was just amazing and the action sequences just take your breath away. And we aren’t talking like only two action scenes that last for two minutes.  This was basically a full on western movie like you would watch back in the 1950’s! Absolutely amazing! Definitely deserves to be on the number one spot for movies this year.

Honorable Mentions:

  • Jungle Book
  • The Edge of Seventeen
  • La La Land
  • Kubo and the Two Strings
