Healthy Eating On A Budget

With the school year right on our heels and so many expenses coming up it is the perfect time to know what you can purchase as well as cooking tricks to help you eat healthy and keep some extra money in your pocket.

I find that during this time of year it is time and money management are more important than ever. As a result it is great to find efficient and affordable ways to eat healthy. With a healthy and affordable diet we are better able to keep our energy high and expenses low.

In the spirit of fall I will share 5 of my favorite items and money saving tips that you can implement that are all $10 or less. $10 can certainly add up and this list should help. Now I am going to have to warn you, you are going to get a lot for your money. Try out these tips maybe one a week and let me know what your favorites are!

  • 10 lbs of bananas $5 – I know this may sound random but hear me out. In my daily routine bananas serve as a delicious and versatile item. You can grab a bunch that is not all the way ripe and use them these ways:
    1. As the week progresses and the bananas ripen you can peel and freeze them for use as a dairy free ice cream when you have a sweet tooth for an extra kick you can add peanut butter. Click here for a recipe. This is my absolute favorite! 
    2. Throw a banana in your bag as an on the go snack or for after a workout.banana ice cream
  • Organic Brown rice (less that $1.50 per lb./ 4 servings) – I usually don’t go into Whole Foods with the intention of saving money but in the case of their bulk organic brown rice, I find that I am easily able to stick to my budget.  I love that buying in bulk allows you to get the organic products at a great price! I find that brown rice can be delicious and filling. Some of my favorites ways to eat it:
    1. Sauté some carrots, celery and red onions; add in soy sauce and add your cooked brown rice for an easy fried rice
    2. Pour your favorite stew or soup over some brown rice for a delicious lunch or dinner option.

  • Freeze your soups – This is huge and my favorite as the chilly weather approaches! Make your own black bean soup or dal and place them into a freezer bag. Be sure to freeze the soup laying the bag flat, this allows you to break off a piece of your favorite soup anytime of the year. Click here for a 5 ingredient black bean soup! Feel free to add in your favorite veggies or turkey for your own spin.

  • Add veggies to your ground meat dishes (save $10 and cut your meat bill in half). This can potentially slice your weekly meat expenses in half. Chop up the veggies as small as you can and saute with a little salt pepper and your favorite spices then add them to the ground meat dish that you have. One example of this is sloppy Joe; but I also add the cooked veggies to ground turkey for meatballs. Click here for an example of meatballs with veggies hidden into the dish.

  • Only eat what you bring with you – This is an ongoing exercise. Pack all of your meals and snacks at the beginning of the day or week. Try this for 1 day then work your way up to a week. From there compare how much you have saved. This change saved me on average $10 a day.
